Athletics

All classes are working hard at the moment on the fundamentals of athletics in preparation for the South-West Taieri Schools Athletic championships. The main focus in class programmes is to develop the following Fundamental Principles of Athletics:

The Fundamental Principles covered in the Running Activities are:
• Light quick movements
• Upright carriage of the head and trunk
• Movement of the feet and limbs in a straight path
• Ability to maintain rhythm when running over obstacles/distance

The Fundamental Principles covered in the Jumping/Leaping Activities are:
• Jumping may be from a standing start or from an approach run
• Take-offs may be made from one foot or from two feet
• Jumper’s legs will bend or flex in preparing to jump
• Arms should swing backwards in preparing to jump, then swing vigorously up as the jump is made.

The Fundamental Principles covered in the Throwing Activities are:
• Transfer of weight from back foot to front foot
• Release high against a braced left side (or right)
• Throw high in order to go far
• Keep the feet on the ground
